Soft Light on a Budget: A Filmmaker's Guide

As filmmakers, we're constantly chasing that elusive, soft quality of light. However, the pursuit often comes with a hefty price tag attached to specialized equipment like softboxes, diffusion frames, and various materials. But what if there was a more budget-friendly alternative?

In this blog post, I'll share with you a technique I use to achieve beautifully lit setups using just one Amaran 200d light and a practical light source. Not only is this method cost-effective, but it also offers versatility and portability, making it perfect for filmmakers working within constraints.

Setting the Scene

For the demonstration, I set my camera's white balance to 3200k to capture the distinct blue hue from the window. This setting not only enhances the ambiance but also provides flexibility for adjustments in post-production if necessary.

The practical lamp in the shot emits light at around 3200k as well. To maintain consistency, I attached a CTO gel to the Amaran 200d to match the warmth of the lamp's light.

Achieving Softness with Diffusion

To enhance the softness of the light falling on the subject's face, I utilized a 5-in-1 light reflector as a diffusion tool. While alternatives like white sheets or shower curtains can work, the versatility of the 5-in-1 reflector adds value beyond just diffusion.

Overcoming Challenges

One challenge encountered was the bouncing of light from the 200d due to the room's white walls. Ideally, blackout curtains would have been installed to control the light better. However, improvisation was necessary. I balanced negative fill above the light source and camera to mitigate excessive bounce.

Why Not a Softbox?

You might wonder why a softbox wasn't used for better light control. Space constraints in the room's corner made it impractical. Additionally, the larger light source created by the reflector resulted in softer diffusion, enhancing the overall look.
