My Home Office Desk Tour

This is my home office set up.

This is my home office set up.

So, being freelance for awhile now, I needed a creative workspace that fitted my needs as a filmmaker, editor and designer. Plus a dedicated space where I won’t get distracted easily…I’m still working on that.

Hi my name is Dan Henry and I thought I’d take you through a tour of my home office. So here we go…

Most of the furniture is along one side of the room, To start off with I bought two ikea bookshelves and a couple of glass cabinets. To make the cabinets align with the bookshelf’s I had to make four wooded bases for the top and bottom so that it all matched in size. These also served as a handy storage area for my gear that I don’t use all the time.

The next step was to breakdown my old desk. I had it for a long time but the steel draw system I installed was ropey at best, plus I found the second shelf tier was too high for my monitor.

I needed a nice long desk that could be tailored to the space in between the two glass cabinets. So, I went for two Alex draws also from ikea and a solid wood kitchen worktop from B&Q iIn kava beech.

Once the foundation of the desk was sorted it was time to wire all of my hardware. I work on both Mac and PC. I do lots of design work and video editing on the Mac and heavy VFX video graphic work on the PC.

I use the logic tech craft keyboard and MX master 2 mouse so I can switch between the two computers with a touch of a button. Underneath all that I’m using an extra large gaming mouse matt pad. It’s non slip, water resistant and it gives me extra comfort when editing for long periods of time.

My monitor I’ve been using for the past 3 or 4 years is the Dell monitor. It’s fine but I think I’d like to upgrade it soon. It’s mounted with a ergo monitor arm so I can adjust the height and position with minimum effort.

I also have a desk mounted extension arm with a STC 20 condenser mic from Sontronics so I can record voice overs with ease.

For sound I use a pair of Genelec monitors that I’ve had for about 10 years. And over that period I feel I know the character of those speakers for mixing sound well. Headphones wise, I use a pair of V-Modas, again I’ve had them for awhile and I’m used to the sound I get from them. I occasionally do a bit of music production and I run all my audio into my computer via the ID14 Audient USB interface.

The draws are now home to camera accessories and various stationary . It’s just nice to keep things clear on my desk. Along with back up drives in my desk draws I also back up onto a 14tb Drobo drive. Always back up your backups just in case.

As I work sat down at desk a lot, I invested into a comfortable gaming chair. With regular breaks it prevents my back from aching.

For cabling I used strong velcro to organise the wires to be out of sight. I also mounted more power points under the desks along with a card reader for easy access.

I have A loose USB cable for my iPad and phone situated on a small cable mount so I don’t lose it down the back of the desk.

On the other side of the room I use an Ikea shelf to store and organise my camera accessories and printer. It also serves as a second table top. The space is pretty small so I wanted the option to slide it around where desired for When I need to do larger overhead filming.

I’m a total geek at heart and with that I have a small collection of statues and memorabilia from various comic cons that’s built up over the years, I feel it adds that little personal touch to the space. My books and graphic novels are organised on ether side of the bookshelves which is also home to my camera bodies.

I have various framed pieces of artwork on the walls too. All from artists I’ve either met at conventions or from following their work online.

That’s my home office space. Because I’ve been working as well, Its taken about 6 months to get it to a place where I’m happy with it . If you have any questions, give me a shout in the comments below.

See you in the next one.
